The Netherlands

Topics in the Netherlands in secondary education are development of individual talents and creating the possibilities that student scan be outstanding (source: sectoragenda VO-raad and quality-agenda of Ministry of OCW). Careerorientation and careerguidance is an important instrument so that students make a well-grounded, successful study-choice with the result that early schoolleaving decreases. 10% of the students of prevocational education does not continue further education and more than 30% fails in achieving their starting qualification at the VET-school. There are more figures, but students who know what they want are more succesful in further education and on the labourmarket.

General consensus about:

  • Careerorientation and careerguidance has to improve at schools;
  • The career of students is still not the central issue;
  • The importance of good careerorientation and careerguidance for future careers is still not recognised by Schoolmanagement and teachers.

More or less consensus about:
  • Careerorientation and careerguidance has a poor legal framework;
  • No quality requirements;
  • Schools are not directly confrontated with the impact of wrong career/studychoices;
  • Careerorientation and careerguidance is the “problem” of the student counsellor and is something from outside the school.

The focus of “project stimulering LOB” is therefore:
  • Exchange knowledge about Careerorientation and careerguidance;
  • Quality: wat is good careerorientation and careerguidance; startingpoint schools versus future;
  • Individual plan per school;
  • Cooperation with schools for further education.
