The overall structure and the national targets in the field of guidance are defined in the Act on Guidance in Relation to Choice of Education, Training and Career, which was adopted by the Danish parliament in April 2003. Subsequently, the 2003 has been amended twice: in 2006 and 2007. Career guidance is currently organized as showed in the following figure:

Guidance in relation to education, are offered in two different types of guidance centres, which are the Youth Guidance Centres (UU) with responsibility for guidance related to the transition from compulsory school to youth education and the Regional Guidance Centres (Studievalg) with responsibility for guidance related to the transition from youth education to higher education.

The Act on guidance is primarily targeted at young people up to the age of 25 years but it also concerns services for adults wishing to enter a higher education program.

The Ministry of Education is responsible for a national guidance portal: www.ug.dk. (UddannelsesGuiden). Among other, it provides information on education and training possibilities, vocations/professions, labour market conditions and statistics. Six university colleges in Denmark offer a one-year modular common training programme at diploma level for guidance practitioners across sectors.
