Denmark

Compulsory education in Denmark includes the pre-primary classes (6 – 7 years of age), that has recently been renamed first form. The primary and lower secondary education (age 7-16/17 years of age) is a comprehensive education named Folkeskole, which comprises the compulsory forms 1- 9 and a voluntary 10th form. The 10th form is particularly aimed at pupils who are not ready to choose and/or enter an upper secondary education.

The upper secondary education is, in Denmark offered in courses that either qualifies for admission to higher education or qualifies the student within a vocational education program. The courses that qualify for further studies are divided into 4 different lines (stx, hf, hhx, htx) each aiming at different target groups and/or different lines of further study. The vocational education and training combines general and vocational education at a vocational college with on-the- job training. The vocational education system entails an introductory period, which is common for all students. In the introductory period, the students will receive tuition within humanities as well as social and natural sciences. At the end of the introductory period, all students choose an issue-specific direction; that is, choose subjects to concentrate on within certain predetermined frameworks and combinations.
