“Career management skills refer to a whole range of competences which provide structured ways for individuals and groups to gather analyse, synthesise and organize self educational and occupational information as well as the skills to make and implement decisions and transitions”

This is the interpretation of the term career management skills by the European Lifelong Guidance Policy Network, and for Austria the first programmatic key strategic priority of the National Lifelong Guidance Strategy. This key strategic priority meets this point directly: to develop and to gain essential basic competences concerning the ability for individual responsible decisions for educational and occupational pathways should be an integrated part of all educational and occupational pathways and curricula.

From the point of view of Austrian educational and employment policy the following aspects are essential

  • ability to self reflection
  • competence and willingness to prepare and to make well reflected decisions
  • recherché and validation of information and data, especially with ICT
  • ability to define personal aims and objectives and to follow personal perspectives
